As Donald Trump's Freedom 250 concert series continues to fall apart, one of his ideological foes is planning a big show just outside of Washington, DC with a much higher level of star-power. Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who just finished taking part in Bruce Springsteen's protest-heavy Land Of Hope & Dreams tour, has announced plans for a one-off festival called Power To The People, set to take place Oct. 3, exactly one month ahead of the midterm elections, at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.
The Power To The People Festival is billed as "a celebration of peace, justice, solidarity, music, and community action." Springsteen, a recent and frequent target of Donald Trump, announced the festival onstage last night, at the closing date of the Land Of Hope & Dreams tour at Washington, DC's Nationals Park. Previously, Springsteen debuted his anti-ICE protest song "Streets Of Minneapolis" at a Minneapolis benefit show that Morello organized. At Power To The People, Springsteen is billed as a "special guest," and he's one of several acts on the bill who could easily fill Merriweather just by himself.
Morello will also perform at Power To The People, and he and Springsteen will be joined by a ton of acts known for their lefty leanings. Foo Fighters and Dave Matthews are also set to headline. Movie star Jack Black will perform with a backing band that notably does not include his Tenacious D partner Kyle Gass, who was sidelined for his Trump assassination-attempt joke two years ago.
The lineup also includes Joan Baez, Dropkick Murphys, Cypress Hill, Killer Mike, System Of A Down's Serj Tankian, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard, the Pretty Reckless' Taylor Momsen, the Linda Lindas, Run-DMC's Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, Grandson, the Neighborhood Kids, and former Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron. Artist Shepard Fairey designed the poster, and he'll play a DJ set.
The festival will have two stages, and it'll also include "Freedom Village," which a press release describes as "an immersive space highlighting opportunities for civic engagement, grassroots organizing, education, mutual aid, and social impact initiatives." A portion of the ticket sales, as well as 100% of the proceeds from VIP tickets, will go to the pro-democracy organizations VoteRiders and HeadCount.
