Carly Simon announces Comes In Waves, first album of original songs since 2008

“Howl” opens the album, a song that "lives in that space between betrayal and forgiveness, where anger has to be voiced before it can be released," Simon explained in a press statement. "It’s about letting the frustration out so it doesn’t sit and simmer."

Across the record, that emotional arc repeats in different shapes. The title is drawn from “Slowly”, a song about patience and emotional return, where feelings are described as rising and receding like a tide.

Comes In Waves was built with a close circle of family and long-term collaborators. Simon’s son Ben Taylor appears throughout as a singer, musician, producer, and writer, while her daughter Sally Taylor contributes vocals and created the cover artwork for the single. The late rapper John Forté, who died earlier this year, features on the album. Producer Paul Samwell-Smith - who originally worked on Simon’s 1971 LP Anticipation - returned to revisit and rework “Share The End”, and continued to oversee the entire project. Longtime collaborator Frank Filipetti, a producer and engineer, also played a central role in shaping the record.

Simon, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and multiple Grammy winner, has not rushed her return to original material. Her last album of new songs arrived in 2008, making Comes In Waves the first full statement of self-penned work in nearly two decades.
