Push has thrust himself back into the spotlight with the release of one of the most gorgeous trance albums of the year, Known Universe.
Turn back the clock to the early days of the trance scene, and you’ll find Push, also known as M.I.K.E. Push, winning over the hearts and minds of electronic music lovers with tracks like “Universal Nation.” Decades later, the Belgian DJ and producer has built quite a legacy, with multiple albums featuring gorgeous soundscapes for listeners to bask in. Now, he’s added another impressive offering to his discography with his eighth album, Known Universe.
Out now via Black Hole Recordings, Known Universe arrives at a time when trance is beginning to surge back into the limelight. Notably, Tiësto dropped a re-edit of Push’s iconic track during his own return to the genre at Dreamstate SoCal last year, with it sounding as timeless as ever, much like the rest of his productions. So while the album is filled with twinges of nostalgia, bolstered by his own desire to head back to the past as he produced, it still feels fresh, exciting, and well-suited to the modern wave of trance hitting the masses.
“The idea behind ‘Known Universe’ was to revisit the world that shaped me as a producer,” said Push. “Not just the sounds, but the tools, the creative environment, and the trials that defined electronic music making when I first started releasing records. For this album, I challenged myself to work exclusively with the same generation of hardware that helped create tracks like those on my first album, ‘From Beyond’.”
Push went on to explain that when he was creating albums back then, the machines used to make them were groundbreaking but “far from perfect,” with instability, project loss, and unpredictability. This forced producers to have patience when creating music, while the imperfections brought a level of authenticity that’s difficult to replicate in the current era of the scene.
There are 12 tracks on Known Universe, each filled with trance energy that will take you straight to the rave. Whether you want to dive into the darkness on tracks like “Echoform” and “Activate Vortex” that punch forward with an underground ambiance, or experience expansive chords and melodies on “Trance-Fixation” and “Back When We Believed,” this album will give you your fix.
Other standouts spread throughout include “Future Fall,” “Perceived,” “Night Circuit,” and “Breakpoint,” all of which offer their own sublime soundscapes that will leave you transfixed.
