Chat Pile and Hayden Pedigo by Bayley Hanes
Chat Pile are still riding high off of releasing one of last year’s best albums with Cool World, and now they’ve announced a collaborative album with Texas fingerstyle guitarist Hayden Pedigo, who released his acclaimed new album I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away earlier this year. It’s called In The Earth Again and it arrives on Halloween via Computer Students (pre-order). Per the announcement:
In The Earth Again sees both Chat Pile and Hayden Pedigo explore latent yet previously untapped aspects of their sounds. For Chat Pile, this meant an opportunity to explore moodier arrangements, indulge in sample and tape manipulation, and pen among the most sincere and personal lyrics in their entire discography. In Hayden’s case, this collaboration enabled the visionary guitarist to translate the masterful craft of his typically tranquil, deep country soundscapes into something more sinister, tinged with a visceral, metallic grit that is no less evocative on a sensory level than their solo material. “We all wanted to avoid the downfall you see in a lot of collab records,” explains Hayden. “We didn’t want this record to either end up primarily sounding like one of us more than the other.” Stin from Chat Pile adds, “For the album, every decision made was in support of each other’s ideas and making sure that everything we did was in service of a greater vision.”
The first single is “Radioactive Dreams,” and I would say it fits that goal of not wanting the music to sound more like one of the artists than the other. It sounds like the middle ground between Chat Pile’s sludgy noise rock and Hayden’s Americana guitar soundscapes, and it works really well. Listen and watch the Riley Stearns–directed video below.
Both Chat Pile and Hayden have separate tours coming up as well. Chat Pile are gearing up to open the second leg of Fleshwater‘s tour, which now also includes rising metalcore/deathcore band Balmora on all the dates that Chat Pile are on. (The first leg is with Angel Du$t and Ingrown.) The leg with Chat Pile includes a show at NYC’s Brooklyn Steel on October 28.
Hayden has a headlining tour coming up that hits NYC on November 29 at St. John’s Lutheran Church with support from Jens Kuross.
