If you like the intersection between jazz, heavy rock music, and the avant-garde, you may want to know that Colin Stetson, Greg Fox, and Trevor Dunn are releasing a collaborative album called Nethering on February 13 via Envision/Invada (pre-order). The first taste of the LP is the noisy, hypnotic, album-opening title track, and you can hear that below.

In case they need introductions, Colin Stetson is the saxophone master who’s played with Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, TV On The Radio, and so many other bands; Greg Fox is the former drummer of Liturgy and Uniform and also a member of Zs, Guardian Alien, and other projects; and you know Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle, Secret Cheifs 3, Fantômas, Tomahawk, and more. The trio recorded the fully-improvised album in 2018, a year after Stetson and Fox’s band Ex Eye released their sole album.

Colin also revealed that this is the first in a series of “minimal free jazz and improvised collaborations” that Envision/Invada will be releasing, so stay tuned for more.
