Dave Grohl tries to avoid controversy like fish try to avoid the skies, but in a new interview with the Irish Times, the Foo Fighters frontman broke from convention and talked politics.
“Fucking Neil Young is angrier than ever – jeez, Louise,” Grohl said. “But, yeah, of course, it’s hard not to feel political living in America, where we’re deeply divided. And there’s injustice, and there’s so much hate and fear, and it’s such a drag.”
Grohl added, “I try to love everyone, because I think that’s what you’re supposed to do – and I do. But there needs to be change in that direction, and it’s been hard to find in the States.”
Neil Young says eight angrier things than that before breakfast, but longtime Foo watchers know this as close as Grohl gets to turning green and hulking out of his flannels. Before that, he hadn’t gotten much more political than a PR statement asking Donald Trump to stop playing “My Hero” and donating proceeds from the song to Kamala Harris’ campaign. “There needs to be change” is very close to a direct criticism — almost unheard of for the man who famously saw his friends die and then “chose life.”
Foo Fighters’ new album, Your Favorite Toy, drops April 24th.
