Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine insists that he played a significant role in the musical direction of each and every member of the big “Big Four” bands of thrash metal, which also includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax.
In an interview with Brazil’s 89 FM A Rádio Rock, Mustaine brought up Slayer guitarist Kerry King’s brief stint in an early incarnation of Megadeth.
“Kerry and I played together and I showed him how to play Megadeth songs, which was before he started to have all those pivotal records.” King had a brief stint with Megadeth in 1984 when Mustaine first became vocalist of the group he founded.
“And I wrote music in Metallica and Megadeth,” added Mustaine, who was an early member of Metallica.
Regarding Anthrax, Mustaine recalled, “And when I met Scott [Ian] and the guys in Anthrax out in New York, same thing happened. The first record was very different from the record they made after they met me and the guys in Metallica.”
Megadeth’s legendary career is coming to a gradual end. The band released its final album, a self-titled effort, back in January, and have launched a farewell tour which is expected to last a number of years.
Among the dates on Megadeth’s 2026 itinerary is a support stint on Iron Maiden’s late summer North American tour, which will also feature Anthrax. Pick up tickets here.
