deary announce debut album, Birding

1 month ago 18

deary is formed of vocalist and guitarist Dottie Cockram, guitarist Ben Easton, and drummer Henry Catchpole. Birding follows the band's debut EP Fairground released in 2023, and as Easton says, “Our last EP was us trying to be deary, and this album is us being deary.”

"Seabird" arrives as the first preview of the upcoming album. Speaking of the track, the band say: “'Seabird' is like a fable, a story of a person pleading to an omnipotent bird and asking, ‘when does it all get better?’ We wanted to recreate that kind of majesty, feeling insignificant to the wider world. It is the perfect introduction to the rest of the record in that regard.”

The album, as Cockram and Easton explain, examines the impact that humans have on the world. “I got really into reading about birds and all these historical stories and poetry about them,” Cockram notes. “You find these beautiful images of birds that represent hope, but they're also animals. Some of them, like vultures and crows, are a sign of death to some people. They represent all these different elements, which I think sum up a lot of the album.”

“The album is all about human consequences,” Easton adds. “Consequences on each other, our own minds, on mental health, on nature. One idea that was quite tangible to us is the idea that humans have the biggest consequences on innocent, vulnerable, sentient beings, like birds, for example. It goes with the vulnerability of our inner selves, or the child in us, which pairs with the album art—a kid trying to fly. It's very ethereal, but it also has a lot of sad undertones to it as well.”
