Maxell was once synonymous with being one of the best cassette tape brands, thanks in part to its “Blown Away” ad campaign. Now, the Japanese company has launched a new personal cassette player with modern features like Bluetooth and USB-C charging.
For just over $80, you get Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C fast charging that tops you off in under two hours, and, unlike most modern phones, a headphone jack. The battery life is respectable, with a touted 11 hours of Bluetooth playtime. It even comes with a belt clip in case you truly want the old-school feel.

If you’re willing to shell out the money, Gen Xers and elder Millennials like myself can now listen to the old mixtapes that have been collecting dust without having to hit up eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Meanwhile, younger millennials and Gen Z get the retro experience of having to rewind and fast forward a tape to scratch an itch for one song.
With cassette sales reportedly doubling in the first quarter of 2025, after increasing 443% from 2015 to 2022, Maxell is clearly capitalizing on demand, but it’s nice not to have to rely on off-brands just to play your tapes.
