This past Friday, a listening party for a new Earl Sweatshirt album called Live Laugh Love was advertised as going down in LA. That’s a hilarious thing for Earl to title an album, and the hilarity didn’t stop there. Complex‘s Eric Skelton covered the event and wrote:
Last night, Earl Sweatshirt threw a listening party in LA for a mysterious new album. It’s called ‘Live Laugh Love,’ and the night ended in a very unexpected, entertaining way. Here’s what went down…
When we showed up, there were signs displaying the name of the album, ‘Live Laugh Love.’ Inside, three custom cocktails were being served at the bar: Live Whiskey, Laugh Vodka, and Love Tequila.
Copies of a zine were handed out to attendees. It included a “contributors” page that has since been inaccurately described on social media as an album contributors list. But it’s actually a list of contributors to the zine.
[The list includes Dave Chappelle, Donald Glover, Vince Staples, The Alchemist, and many others.]
The party started normally. Earl’s new music was played loudly (it sounds great) and the DJ offered funny commentary, like, “I still can’t believe this is what he named the album.”
As the listening session came to a close, though, Earl still hadn’t made an appearance at his own party. Some of his friends were there (including Zack Fox) but Earl was nowhere to be seen…
Then the DJ made an announcement about Earl’s entrance: “I’m bringing my brother out.” Then a man wearing a Supreme hat walked to the center of the room, grabbed a mic, and started performing Earl Sweatshirt songs. We’ll let you come to your own conclusions. But… um… Earl looks a lot different from the last time we saw him?
You can see Complex‘s full post and other fan-shot videos from the party below, but what Skelton means by that last sentence is: the person who came out was very clearly not Earl Sweatshirt. Later on in Skelton’s review, he wrote, “Honestly, we still don’t know if we just unwittingly participated in a Zack Fox comedy sketch. Or maybe it’ll turn into a music video. OR maybe Earl just thought it was funny to send an imposter to his own party (if so, he was right).”
This whole thing obviously leaves us with a lot of unanswered questions, but it looks like we at least might be getting a new Earl Sweatshirt album called Live Laugh Love. Stay to find out, and check out some videos of the party below…
