Sabrina Carpenter Emerges From a Manhole to Perform “Tears” at VMAs: Watch

4 weeks ago 29

Sabrina Carpenter has done it again. The perky pop star lit up the 2025 MTV VMAs with a provocative performance of “Tears,” taken from her recently released seventh album, Man’s Best Friend (which landed on our Best Albums of August 2025 list). Watch the performance below.

As a song about — well, climaxing — Carpenter unsurprisingly pushed the envelope with her performance. She emerged from a.. manhole and soon found herself soaked in the rain. And in one of the night’s lone political moments, she was joined by a group of drag performers holding signs with slogans like “Dolls, Dolls, Dolls,” “If You Hate You’ll Never Get Laid,” and “Protect Trans Rights.”

It’s the latest in a series of highlight performances for Carpenter this year, which includes a surprise appearance from R&B legends Earth, Wind & Fire during her set at this year’s Lollapalooza to play “Let’s Groove” and “September.” Back in July, she welcomed members of new wave icons Duran Duran to the stage during a show at London’s BST Hyde Park for a run-through of that band’s 1982 classic, “Hungry Like the Wolf.”

While she’s celebrating the release of Man’s Best Friend (which arrived with a controversial album cover that was defended by soft-rock legend, Carly Simon), Carpenter isn’t quite done with her breakout 2024 full-length, Short n’ Sweet. The pop star has scheduled a victory lap tour for that album with a string of US dates that kick off in late October with a two-night stand in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before cruising through New York City, Nashville, Toronto and Los Angeles for multi-night runs (get tickets here).

The singer’s 2026 dance card is already filling up, as she’s set to join the likes of Chappell Roan, Lorde and Deftones for Lollapalooza’s South American festivals in Chile, Argentina, and Brasil.
