Ed Sheeran Brings Dave Grohl, John Mayer, and More to Perform F1’s “Drive” on Kimmel: Watch

1 month ago 17

Ed Sheeran stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night to play “Drive,” his contribution to the soundtrack for F1 The Movie, and he brought instrumentalists Dave Grohl, Pino Palladino, John Mayer, Blake Slatkin, and Rami Jaffee along for the performance.

Reprising their roles from the original recording — Grohl on drums, Mayer and Slatkin on guitar, Palladino on bass, and fellow Foo Fighter Jaffee on keys — along with two backing vocalists, the group brought “Drive” to life with an electric, shred-heavy rendition. Grohl threw down behind the kit, as usual (See: Grohl’s bewildering drum fill at 2:49), while Mayer, Slatkin, and Sheeran interlocked for the song’s central bluesy guitar riff. There was a whole lot of attitude; even the 68-year-old Palladino grooved out to the track in the far left corner. Watch the performance below.

Sheeran and co.’s performance arrived as Kimmel has been spotlighting original music from last year’s biggest films. On Tuesday night, Kimmel hosted Raphael Saadiq, Miles Caton, and Ludwig Göransson to perform “I Lied to You” from Sinners, and last week, EJAE, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna (the singing voices of HUNTR/X) debuted a new “Glowin'” rendition of “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. All three tracks — including “Drive” — made this year’s shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

As for Sheeran, he’s gearing up for a massive 2026 summer tour in support of last year’s PLAY. He’ll launch the “LOOP Tour” on June 13th; learn how to get tickets here.

Meanwhile, Grohl and Jaffee apparently pulled double duty on Wednesday, with Foo Fighters headlining a benefit show and celebrating Grohl’s 57th birthday that evening at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
