Manchester greats Elbow released their 10th album, AUDIO VERTIGO, in 2024, which was a rather radical reinvention of their well-established style, adding danceable rhythms and a dash of fun to their anthemic, swaying sound. They just followed that up with a new EP, AUDIO VERTIGO ECHO, that picks up where the album left off.
“It was more the idea of the record, the album was such a departure musically for us,” frontman Guy Garvey told me. “It was kind of the desire to go further down that road. Who knows where we’re going next, but it’s like, we’ve got this new vehicle, let’s take it for another spin.”
“Also, there’s something about being in EP-land,” Guy added. “We really missed B-sides. Nobody needs to do B-sides any longer. And we loved the kind of artistic freedom it gave you. It’s not as serious as an album. You can experiment a bit more. The pressure’s off a little bit. And the EP format is something we always loved. I think it was listening to the band Ride. They did really amazing EPs, which are just these great 25-minute bodies of work. So yeah, it was great fun.”
Guy and I talked over Zoom as Elbow were in the middle of a three-night stand at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Bandstand. We talked about the new EP, which includes a song co-written by Jimi Goodwin of Doves, the change in direction with AUDIO VERTIGO and how it freed the band, the secret to longevity, connecting with audiences at their shows, NYC famous superfans Dennis & Lois, their first major North American tour in eight years, and lots more.
