EVOKEN Returns With Absolutely Miserable New Single "Matins"

American funeral doom emissaries Evoken return this fall with their long-awaited seventh full-length, Mendacium. Set for release on October 17 via Profound Lore Records, the album follows 2018's Hypnagogia and promises to be one of the darkest, most oppressive works in the band's history.

Where Hypnagogia leaned into a more melancholic and accessible sonic palette, Mendacium shifts back toward the monumental, dirge-like dread of Quietus and Antithesis Of Light. Fans can also expect the tectonic heaviness of Caress Of The Void and Atra Mors, alongside new gothic textures and experimental passages reminiscent of Dead Can Dance, Monumentum, and Disembowelment.

The band reunited with producer Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, who previously worked with them on Quietus and Antithesis Of Light. Together they've carved out a sound steeped in sepulchral ambience — a suffocating atmosphere that reflects the catacombs of an ancient cathedral.

Lyrically and thematically, Mendacium tells the story of a fourteenth-century Benedictine monk ravaged by illness, trapped within his monastery cell, and spiraling into anguish. As his faith wavers, he encounters a grotesque entity emerging from a tear in reality. But the central question lingers: is he truly tormented by this being, or are the horrors nothing more than the delirium of his own mind?

To signal its arrival, Evoken have unveiled the first single, "Matins", described by the band as "a peek into a reality." The track encapsulates the suffocating dread and cathedral-like ambience that defines the record, serving as a glimpse into the full descent awaiting listeners.
