Exodus have announced their 12th studio album, Goliath, arriving March 20th on Napalm Records — marking the Bay Area thrash legends’ label debut and first album with vocalist Rob Dukes since 2010. The band also served up the opening track and lead single, “3111.”
Beginning with the kind of dissonant notes that guitarist Gary Holt typically plays in Slayer, the track eventually kicks into a breakneck thrash attack with a delightfully unhinged performance from Dukes, who relishes in what is his first officially released song since rejoining the band.
“We decided to go hard with the leadoff single, ‘3111,’” the band stated in a press release. “The song is about the narco killings in Juarez, and ‘3111’ is the estimated number of murders for 2010 alone.”
In fact, the single was supposed to be accompanied by a music video, but it was apparently “too brutal” and was denied by YouTube. “It will be released in its entirety at a later time and place.”
As for the rest of Goliath, the other band members said Dukes gave “the performance of his life” in delivering the vocals. The album was self-produced by Exodus and mixed and mastered by Mark Lewis (Whitechapel, Nile, Undeath).
“Are we excited for this record? That’s an understatement,” the band commented in its press release. “We put everything we had into this record (and it’s 80 percent complete follow up, but we’ll save that conversation for another day!) and it’s one of our proudest accomplishments. Wildly collaborative, the most band centric album to date with four songs written by Lee, lyrics by Gary, Rob, Lee and Tom, and just killer all the way around. The time to let the monster loose is coming! Bow Down!”
The album will drop shortly after Exodus complete their upcoming Canadian tour supporting Megadeth in March. Over a month later, Exodus join up with Sepultura as support for the latter’s final North American tour this spring. Get tickets here.
