There’s always been a streak of rebellion in Felicia Day’s work, but her latest project might be the purest version of it yet. In her new graphic novel The Lost Daughter of Sparta, she digs into ancient Greek mythology and pulls out a character history mostly forgot, building a hero’s journey that flips the old rules on their head. Speaking with Kyle Meredith, Day traces the book back to sleepless pandemic nights, deep dives into mythology, and a realization that sometimes the best stories are the ones no one’s touched for 2,500 years. “I stumbled across this character and I wanted to write her a story because she actually only has one line in history,” Day says, describing how insomnia-fueled reading sessions led her to Philonoe, a nearly erased figure connected to Helen of Troy. “There was one blog entry on her that was just about how we don’t know anything else… and I was so excited about kind of inventing a story for her.” That freedom became the point, less about filling in gaps and more about reshaping the myth itself. “I love adaptations of Greek mythology with a feminist spin,” she continues, name-checking modern retellings while carving out her own lane, “making me think about them in a different way — that was one of the reasons I started.”

But the book’s real backbone isn’t ancient — it’s personal. “For a long time I was so eager to please other people that I was betraying myself,” she admits, tying her own Hollywood experiences into the story’s emotional core. That tension between expectation and identity drives her version of the hero’s journey, one that resists the old, male-dominated template. “I took the rules and then I decided to break them all,” she says with a laugh.

And that same defiant energy is fueling what’s next, including a long-awaited return to The Guild. “I’m going to be launching The Guild reunion movie Kickstarter this summer… the script is done and we had a reading and it’s great,” she reveals. “I want to make a big deal out of it… to bookend the DIY of it,” she adds, doubling down on the fan-powered spirit that made the series a cult cornerstone in the first place.
