There’s a certain kind of comedy that starts with a simple idea and then gleefully wrecks it, and that’s exactly what happens in Pizza Movie, the new Hulu trip-out that turns a late-night food run into something far stranger. Gaten Matarazzo, Sean Giambrone, and Lulu Wilson lean into a story that plays like a level-jumping video game, full of hallucinations, body swaps, and increasingly bizarre detours. Speaking with Kyle Meredith, the trio break down how a movie this unhinged still manages to feel intentional, from its structure to its performances. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
For Giambrone, the hook was immediate once the script landed, even if the pitch didn’t quite capture how weird things would get. “They pitched it to me kind of as like a Superbad,” he says, before realizing the movie had a much stranger engine under the hood. That mix of buddy comedy and altered reality gave him a lane to play in, even if he jokes about the subject matter itself. “I love the drug movies like Harold & Kumar and Cheech and Chong, and stuff like that,” he adds, “so I was super game.”
Wilson and Matarazzo, meanwhile, zeroed in on one of the film’s trickiest swings: a body swap sequence that avoids the usual clichés. “I really wanted to turn away from doing the normal thing,” Matarazzo explains. “Every time a guy does this type of scene, his first instinct is to play it broad, and I didn’t want that.” Instead, the humor comes from how well the characters know each other. “The joke here is that they know so much about each other that they can fully blackmail each other,” he says.
Wilson echoes that approach, noting how it shifts the focus away from easy gags. “Instead of like, ‘oh, I have boobs,’ it’s like, ‘oh, I don’t have braces,’” she says, laughing. “It was different, and it made it way more fun to play.”
