GOP Representatives Call for Investigation Into Bad Bunny’s Halftime Performance

Several Republican congressman have called for investigations into Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, alleging that the Puerto Rican musician potentially violated decency standards.

The main crux of their arguments centers around the lyrics of songs such as “Safaera” and “Yo Perreo Sola,” which Bad Bunny performed at the Super Bowl. In their uncensored form translated to English, they contain words and lyrics like “pussy,” “horny,” “eat your ass,” and “fucked off.” The only problem is that Bad Bunny is either censored or omitted these lyrics from his performance at the Super Bowl.

Seemingly oblivious to Bad Bunny’s own act of self-censorship or hoping their base doesn’t bother to do much research into the story, at lease three Republican congressman are nevertheless moving ahead with calls for an investigation.

In a letter to the FCC chairman Brendan Carr imploring him to launch a probe, Florida Republican congressman Randy Fine wrote, “What Americans witnessed during the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny was despicable and never should be allowed to be shown on television again… In America, our laws are not suggestions, and no matter what foreign language you speak, you must comply.” Fine specifically cited the line “el perico es blanco” from Bad Bunny’s song “NUEVAYoL,” which is a reference to cocaine.

“Bad Bunny seems to think that since he was performing in a foreign language and encouraging the audience to use the F-word, he can circumvent the FCC regulations and put on a disgusting, inappropriate performance,” Fine added.

Mark Alford, a Republican representative from Missouri, told Real America’s Voice that he also plans to speak with FCC chairman Carr: “The lyrics from what we’ve seen from Bad Bunny are very disturbing. And if it holds true — I don’t speak fluent Spanish, okay, I know how to ask where the bathroom is — but if it’s true what was said on national television, we have a lot of questions for the entities that broadcast this.” He added, “This could be much worse than the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction.”

Outside of the FCC, Andy Ogles, a Republican congressman from Tennessee, has formally requested that the House Energy and Commerce Committee open its own investigation. He decried the performance as “pure smut” and “indecent” for featuring “explicit sexual references and graphic lyrical” and “widespread twerking, grinding, pelvic thrusts and other sexually suggestive conduct.”

Despite Republicans’ concerns, the viewing audience didn’t seem too turned off by Bad Bunny’s performance: over 128 million people tuned in to watch it, making it the fourth most viewed halftime show in history.
