Hayley Williams extended her beef with Morgan Wallen during the last of three nights at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Sunday night, bringing Jason Isbell on stage for a duet of the latter’s 2013 classic, “Cover Me Up.” Check out fan-shot footage below.
For background on the significance of this duet, Wallen’s 2019 cover of Isbell’s track is one of the country star’s biggest hits, having gone 8x Platinum as of December 2025. Just weeks after the song was included in Wallen’s 2021 double album, Dangerous, he was caught on video using a racial slur. This prompted Isbell to pledge all of his proceeds from “Cover Me Up” to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP.
Fast forward to 2025, when Williams hit out at a “racist country singer” on the title track of her latest solo album, Ego Death at a Bachelorette Party, which she later confirmed was Wallen on The New York Times’ Popcast podcast.
Earlier in the tour, Williams named-dropped Wallen at Boston’s House of Blues during a speech supporting marginalized people. “[They] need protection, and they need allies and support,” she said. “Back home, we have the same shit. I hate it because I grew up there, and it was so special. Then I got older, and I could see. I had different eyes to see it all.”
“They ruined Broadway… no shade if you want to travel down there and go honk tonkin’,” she continued. “I like that, too, but I hate Morgan Wallen. Oh no. That’ll be on the internet. Fuck. Let’s play.”
This is all consistent with comments Williams made before her solo tour, saying that people with “harmful ideologies,” like racists, sexists, and anti-trans bigots, were not welcome.
Remaining US stops on Williams’ tour include Chicago, Los Angeles, and Nashville, her adopted home. Look for sold-out tickets here.
