The team behind Hollow Knight: Silksong has confirmed a big expansion is coming to the hit game – and it won’t cost you a penny.
Hollow Knight: Silksong finally launched in September after first being announced back in 2019. Despite the long wait, the game was a hit with fans and went on to become one of the best-reviewed titles of 2025.
Last month, developers at Team Cherry teased an expansion was in the works. “Launching [the game] is obviously quite exciting. What comes after for us is equally as exciting.”
And now the “what comes after” has been revealed. “New areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in our nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year. We’ll keep further details a secret for now, but expect additional info shortly before Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea Of Sorrow releases,” wrote Team Cherry in a blog post. The studio has also shared a slick trailer for the Sea Of Sorrow expansion.
“We wanted to say a huge thank you to all the players who’ve braved Silksong’s distant and dangerous lands. That’s over seven million of you who’ve purchased the game, alongside millions more playing on Xbox Game Pass,” the post continued.
“It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!). Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.”
Team Cherry went on to say that Sea Of Sorrow is only the “first” big expansion, which suggests more are also in the works. Earlier this year, the Hollow Knight team hinted that a sequel to Silksong was already being considered.
An updated version of the original Hollow Knight is also in the works for Nintendo Switch 2 owners, with high frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and many additional graphical effects. The free update is set to launch in 2026.
In other news, the second season of Fallout is hitting Amazon Prime Video earlier than first announced – with the first episode coming later today (December 16).
