The newly announced record – set for release on 17 April – follows a deliberate step back from music for Wilder after 2023's Hookey EP. “I wasn't having a nervous breakdown," she explains. "I was just a hurricane making a whirlwind. I am not stubborn, I'm a mountain. Clouds aren’t pathetic when they cry, so why am I? ...I even, at one point, Googled nunneries.
She found the clarity to refocus by removed herself from the outside world and working in isolation in her shed: “I want to make worlds now,” she says. She enlisted co-producer Andy Savours, known for his work with My Bloody Valentine, The Killers and Black Country, New Road, to help realise the album’s sound. The album's artwork is shot by her sister Dora Paphides.
The announcement is paired with a new single, "Hurricane Girl", which Wilder describes as her “go at cock rock," and draws from 1990s rock influences. “I love Pearl Jam, I love Janes Addiction, I love Stone Temple Pilots, Sound Garden, Aerosmith,” she explains. “I love how swaggering and soaring they sound. The first time I ever listened to Pearl Jam, I was up a mountain, and I wanted to make mountain music too. Songs with elemental scale.”
Up next is a performance at The Old Blue Last in London on 29 January, with further shows confirmed for Get Together Festival in Sheffield and the Dot To Dot festivals in Bristol and Nottingham this May.
