Spotify has confirmed it is no longer running recruitment ads for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a statement to Variety, a spokesperson clarified the spots were part of a broader Department of Homeland Security campaign that ended late last year. “There are currently no ICE ads running on Spotify,” the spokesperson said, noting that the ads “ran across all major media and platforms.”
The $5 million recruitment campaign sparked significant backlash last fall, including calls for a boycott from the organizers behind the No Kings protests. At the time, Spotify similarly defended the placements by noting they were part of a broad government effort.
Spotify’s clarification comes in the wake of the fatal shooting of a US citizen by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7th.
