Wonder Woman will officially be part of James Gunn’s DC Universe. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the DC Studio head confirmed that a new movie centered on the Amazonian hero is actively in development.
“Wonder Woman’s being written right now,” Gunn said, while also confirming the lead role has not been cast yet.
News of the project follows a period of uncertainty for the character. A third Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot and set to be directed by Patty Jenkins was scrapped by Warner Bros. in 2022, shortly after Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to lead DC Studios. In August 2023, Gadot claimed she would be reprising the role in a movie she was co-developing with the new studio heads.
A few days later, however, it was reported that DC Studios was not developing Wonder Woman 3 at the time, nor were there immediate plans for a standalone project. However, it was noted that the character would be included in the upcoming Max prequel series Paradise Lost.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gunn agreed with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s previous statement that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are crucial to the new DC Universe.
“I wouldn’t say only those four characters [are crucial], but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us,” Gunn stated. “Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.”
The David Corenswet-starring Superman film is set to kick things off on July 11th, and will be followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow starring Milly Alcock in June 2026. A new Batman movie, titled The Brave and the Bold, was announced as part of Gunn’s initial DCU slate.
