There’s a certain kind of full-circle poetry in watching Jason Mewes back behind a convenience store counter, only this time he’s not slinging cigarettes in Clerks but hosting a conversation machine disguised as a YouTube series. When Mewes spoke with Kyle Meredith, the actor and comic was juggling his stand-up run “Diary of a Manchild,” ongoing collaborations with Kevin Smith, and a new show called Five Things, where guests wander aisles and let nostalgia do the talking. It’s part throwback, part reinvention, and very much in line with a career that’s survived on instinct, timing, and a willingness to try anything that keeps the lights on. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.

Mewes is the first to admit that longevity in this business isn’t exactly a straight line. “I’ve actually never gotten a job from an audition,” he says, laughing at the absurdity of a 30-year career built almost entirely on word of mouth and friendships. That reality has pushed him toward a more DIY mindset, whether that’s stand-up, podcasting, or jumping into projects like Five Things. “It’s really tough to keep the thing going… unless you’re Robert De Niro or Clint Eastwood, you’re not just getting jobs nonstop.” Instead, he’s leaned into the hustle, building a career out of showing up, saying yes, and figuring it out as he goes.

That same scrappy energy fuels Five Things, which turns a convenience store into a storytelling trigger. “It’s not like sitting with someone and having a list of questions,” Mewes explains. “This is bringing out stuff — like, no one’s ever asked someone if they ever ate elephant peanuts or whatever.” The result is a series that sidesteps the usual press-cycle chatter and lands somewhere more personal, even accidental. As he puts it, “I feel like it really has brought out some good stories… hopefully they’ve never talked about this on any other interview in the last 20 years.” It’s loose, quick to shoot, and surprisingly revealing, which might be exactly why it works.

But there are also larger projects, especially those with his longtime heterosexual lifemate, Kevin Smith. While he jokes about having to schedule time with his friend, he’s looking forward to “another movie with Kevin. We’re hoping — knock on wood — we’re hoping to film another Jay & Bob. It’s called Jay & Silent Bob: Store Wars. Kevin’s got the script, we have half the money. That’s supposed to happen in the middle of the year.”
