Romantic comedies are having another moment, and 40 Dates and 40 Nights leans into everything that made the genre a favorite while keeping its feet planted firmly in reality. Director Andy Delaney and star Joel Courtney recently caught up with Kyle Meredith to discuss the new film, which follows a woman who agrees to go on 40 dates in exchange for a year’s rent, only to discover the biggest challenge isn’t finding love, it’s getting out of her own way. For Delaney, whose legendary career directing music videos for artists like Tori Amos, Lauryn Hill, Seal, and The Wallflowers prepared him for finding emotional rhythm on screen, the appeal wasn’t reinventing the genre but exploring its smaller moments. “We were interested in the journey… the moment-to-moment nuance and laughter and kind of heartache,” he explains. “It kind of liberates you to focus on the micro.” That philosophy extended to the cast, giving Courtney, Bailee Madison, Annie Potts, and the ensemble room to discover their characters naturally. Even the film’s wildest moments were grounded by writer Sarah Howard’s own dating experiences, allowing Delaney to keep every scene rooted in recognizable truth.
Courtney says that authenticity carried over into his performance as Mason, a reserved but quietly charming romantic lead. “Mason feels super grounded, very relatable,” he says, noting that while his own love story is unusually straightforward — he ultimately married the only woman he ever seriously dated — he still drew on experiences of heartbreak, reconnection, and falling in love. Delaney, meanwhile, credits the chemistry between Courtney and Madison with making the film work, recalling the first days on set when he realized, “Okay, we’re not going to screw this up.”
