Several guitars in the collection were used during the recording of Marr's new album The Age Of Everything, announced last week and due for release on 2 October. The guitarist will begin a European tour on 28 June, culminating in his biggest solo headline show to date at London's OVO Arena Wembley on 24 October.
"It's bittersweet to be parting with these guitars but I want them to go to new homes and new people who will love them as much as I have," Marr said in a statement. "I hope they bring as much joy, inspiration and fun – and new songs – as they have given me."
Marr will donate 100% of
the hammer price from ten lots to The Guide Dogs for the Blind
Association and The National Autistic Society.
Leading the auction is a 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, estimated at £100,000-150,000. The guitar was purchased for Marr in early 1984 by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, after Marr joked that The Smiths would sign to the label if Stein bought him a new instrument. Marr wrote the music for "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" and its B-side "Girl Afraid" on the same day.
Highlights from the collection will be on public view in New York from 25 June to 1 July before returning to Christie's London headquarters for a free pre-sale exhibition running from 9 to 16 September.
