Jorja Smith marks tenth anniversary of "Blue Lights" with release of early demos

1 month ago 18

The three-track release, titled Demo Dump ’16’ features unfinished songs uploaded to SoundCloud exactly as they were recorded in 2016, when she was still just 17. A song that addresses police presence and racial profiling, "Blue Lights" was first shared on the platform on 19 January 2016.

The demos favour feeling over technical finish and include the Bruno Major-produced "Somebody Else’. From Tuesday, fans will be invited to vote for their favourite via an Instagram poll, with the winning track slated for an official release on 20 February.

Alongside the digital demos, a four-track vinyl edition of "Blue Lights" has been announced for a 13 February release, featuring the original song, its instrumental, and versions from her NPR Tiny Desk performance and the Machiavelli Sessions with the WDR Funkhausorchester.

The anniversary also marks ten years of FAMM, the independent record label Smith co-founded, which has released all of her music to date. Since "Blue Lights", Smith has released two studio albums.
