It's a good day. It's a great day. After announcing a big tour and a new record deal with 4AD, Julia Jacklin has returned with new music and the promise of a forthcoming album. She's shared the new single "Get Away From Me (I Think I'll Love You Soon)" to announce her new album The Gem, out Sept. 25.
The title kind of says it all. Love can be magnificent, but it has risks. It makes us vulnerable. It gives us something to lose, and the possibility of loss brings the possibility of pain. On this jaunty new folk-rock track, Jacklin is trying to avoid all of that. "There's no need to be sure that this feeling will stay/ I'm just trying to ready myself for what's coming my way," she sings during the first verse. She sounds unfazed, but also like she's preparing for battle, one she's fought time and time again.
“I want to love and be loved, but I also want to be free. The tension between those two things has been the central question of my life,” Jacklin shared in a press release.
The Gem, the follow-up to 2022's PRE PLEASURE, is named after a small bar that Jacklin came familiar with when she first moved to Melbourne from Sydney in 2017. It became her local hangout, a way to ground herself in a new city. The album was recorded in a makeshift studio in one of the hotel rooms above the pub, where she worked Rat Shack studios owner Robert Muinos, guitarist Jacob Diamond, bassist Mimi Gilbert, and drummer Jess Elwood.
