Kacey Musgraves – “Middle Of Nowhere”

1 hour ago 4

In a few weeks Kacey Musgraves will release her sixth studio album Middle Of Nowhere. We've already heard the lead single "Dry Spell," which was one of our favorites from that week. Today, she's shared the title track.

"Middle Of Nowhere" starts in a soft stride. "Out there on the edge of the world, way past common sense," she sings over acoustic strums. "Past the Dairy Queen, the county line, where there ain't any fences/ Gonna find my own peace/ I wanna be..." Before she finishes that liberating thought, there's brilliant time-signature shift. The chorus transitions into a swift waltz, sounding as if Musgraves' horse has found a second wind and is taking her out to a magical new frontier. It sounds so good.

If you're wondering what this gorgeous song might sound like live, we'll probably be getting to hear it real soon. Musgraves was added as a surprise performer for weekend two of Coachella. Her announcement was much better than one of those gaudy billboards: she made a cool-ass kineograph out of a concrete barrier on the highway. She's scheduled to perform 3-3:50 p.m. on Saturday in the Mojave Tent, the slot Jack White rocked last weekend. Maybe she'll even revisit some of that Ronnie Dunn drag she surprised folks with in Nashville last month.

Listen to "Middle Of Nowhere" below.

Middle Of Nowhere is out 5/1 via Lost Highway.
