Per a press release, Musgraves took the album title (and corresponding creative inspiration) from a sign located outside her hometown of Golden, Texas: “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere.” More specifically, Musgraves was interested in exploring the ideas of “open space and traditional western elements,” with the album ultimately serving as a “sonic love letter to the musical borders of country, echoing influence from adjacent genres such as bluegrass, pop, and even bits of Norteño and Zydeco.” (In a show of solidarity, play a trio of shows at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas from May 3rd to May 5th, alongside a trio of mariachi musician brothers who were previously detained by ICE.)

In an interview with Apple Music, Musgraves said that this album is different from how she normally approaches making music. More specifically, she “just started writing and I was also kind of simultaneously going through a breakup and so I was in this period of reevaluating a lot in my personal life and taking a lot of steps back and spending a lot more time alone, like a lot of solitary time.”

Luckily, that new approach eventually offered Musgraves some fresh perspective, including how she views her own work, her career and prospects, and even her place in country music at large.

“One thing that’s interesting that I’ve been trying to work out in my mind is like, I think it’s going to be tempting for a lot of people to say, ‘Oh, it’s a return, she’s returning,” Musgraves said. “And, on one hand, I totally agree. And on the other, I’m kind of like, I don’t think I ever left. I’ve always been so inspired to look at the borders of country music and really play with, the balance of traditional and modern. And I mean, that’s something that I love no matter what medium I’m working with, whether I’m remodeling my house or I’m picking my clothing or whatever. I just love that balance. I love that balance and figuring out how to achieve that.”

In support of Middle of Nowhere, Musgraves will embark on the “Middle of Nowhere Tour.” The 30-date jaunt will see Musgraves play some of country’s biggest rooms, including the United Center in Chicago, Madison Square Garden in New York,  and Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

An American Express ticket pre-sale is set for Tuesday, May 5th at 10:00 a.m. local time, with a fan pre-sale following on Wednesday, May 6th at 10:00 a.m. local (register here). A public on-sale is set for Friday, May 8th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.
