Koyo announce new LP ft. Drain & Fleshwater vocalists, share “Irreversible”

Long Island emo torch-carriers Koyo have announced their sophomore album, Barely Here, due May 8 via Pure Noise. It features two guests (Drain‘s Sammy Ciaramitaro and Fleshwater‘s Marisa Shirar), and lead single “Irreversible” finds Koyo picking up where their great 2023 debut LP Would You Miss It? left off. It was produced by the same person (Jon Markson), and vocalist Joey Chiaramonte says that sticking to their guns was the goal:

I think we’d learned so much about our process from making Would You Miss It? that we knew exactly what we wanted going into this one and it came together with more of an instinctual kind of magic to it. A lot of bands think their second album has to be this magnum opus epic that sews so many things together, and I think we’d actually taken more of that approach with our first LP. So with Barely Here we wanted to do the opposite of that trajectory–we wanted to refine our strengths instead of doing this purposeful departure. It’s a snapshot of what our band is in its most no-frills, perfected form.

“Irreversible” closes the album, and it’s an instantly-satisfying, undeniable example of what Koyo does best: updating the Long Island emo of the late ’90s and early 2000s for a new generation. Check out the song and its video below.

Koyo have a lot of touring coming up too. They’re doing a UK/Europe tour with Arm’s Length, Ben Quad, and Shoreline that starts this week; followed by a North American run with Rise Against and Destroy Boys, and then a slot on Hot Mulligan‘s recently announced tour with Joyce Manor and Saturdays At Your Place.

The Hot Mulligan tour includes a stop at Asbury Park’s Stone Pony Summer Stage on June 16, and Koyo will also play Long Island’s own Great South Bay Music Festival on July 23, alongside three 2000s-era emo bands: The Used, Motion City Soundtrack, and Cartel. All Koyo dates are listed below.
