The second season of Last One Laughing UK has received positive reviews, with one critic declaring it “the funniest TV show of the year”.

The show is a reality contest, where comedians must spend time together in the same house. None of the contestants are allowed to laugh, and if they do they are eliminated from the show, with the last contestant declared the winner. The first three episodes are available on Amazon’s Prime Video now, with new episodes added every Thursday.

Last season’s champion, Bob Mortimer, returns alongside new contestants David Mitchell, Diane Morgan, Romesh Ranganathan, Mel Giedroyc, Alan Carr, Amy Gledhill, Sam Campbell, and Maisie Adam.

Declaring it “the funniest TV show of the year”, The Guardian’s Rachel Aroesti wrote: “This series leaves me helpless with laughter at least once an episode. That might sound like a low bar, but it’s an impressive feat. At a time when TV barely tries to tickle you, this show’s unabashed pursuit of actual mirth is not to be sniffed at.”

The Times’ Carol Midgley said it “may be the most underrated comedy show on television,” adding: “It is puerile, ridiculous and absolutely life-affirming. It might distract you from all the hellish stuff happening in the world, albeit for 30 silly minutes an episode.”

The Independent’s Ellie Harrison wrote: “No spoilers, but I’m happy to report that the show is just as brilliant in its sophomore outing.” The piece added: “Compared to the millions Prime spends on its fantasy dramas, Last One Laughing must have cost mere pennies, and all it requires in terms of commitment is for celebrities to spend six hours in a studio, showing off their best material. In the end, just like the wonderful simplicity of a thumb war or a staring competition, it’s just not that complicated to make the funniest thing on British TV.”

Finally, in a five star review for Metro, enthused: “The surprise standout performer for me from what I’ve seen so far is Sam Campbell. He’s one of the comedians I know the least, but his outlandish remarks about anything and everything mark him as one of the dark horses to watch in the competition. I had no idea what he was about to say most of the time, and I loved it. Bring on the chaos.”

Last December, fans revived a funny anecdote Bob Mortimer shared about Chris Rea, following the singer’s death on December 22, aged 74.
