Leeds collective GROUP A.D.'s debut EP Colour Space Transform is a "portal into uncanny new worlds"

The band, whose name stands for The Group For Action & Dance make music that blends elements of dub, psychedelic no-wave, and expansive orchestral arrangements. Incredibly they've only played live twice so far - a sold-out in-the-round debut and a support slot for English Teacher at O2 Academy Leeds.

Describing the EP's title track, released today, band member Aidan explains its layered origins: “I started with a sample of an old French soul track [and] the string part was written around that, and then I removed the sample — the act of taking it away seemed to give the strings a yearning, cinematic feel.”

The track’s opening line "There is no greater frontier than the one in the rear view mirror" connects a broader creative philosophy, with Aidan citing electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram’s notion of “looking back…to see ahead.”

The EP is influenced by John Barry and Ennio Morricone's film scores, the surf-rock of Jet Harris and 1980s dance. Samples of narrated speech, ambient noise, and fragmented voices are used throughout the record, creating what the group describes as “portals into uncanny new worlds.”

Colour Space Transform will be available on black vinyl from independent record shops, with an exclusive red vinyl edition set for release at Leeds’s Jumbo Records.
