Leyla Ebrahimi – “I’m Sorry Maria”

1 hour ago 3

Right now, certain forces within the music industry would like to encourage you to pay attention to Leyla Ebrahimi, a genre-fluid young singer-songwriter who comes to us from New York via Reston, Virginia. She's got an Interscope contract, and her moody, emotive sound seems fully optimized for maximum virality. One of her main collaborators is Alexander 23, a producer who's worked on hits from Olivia Rodrigo and Renée Rapp. You might feel inclined to dismiss Ebrahimi as a music-industry creation out of hand. That would be an understandable reaction, but it would be the wrong one. Her shit is good.

Ebrahimi has released a handful of singles in the past year, and her new one really grabbed me. "I'm Sorry Maria" starts out as a murky swirl, though it already has a pulse. The song quickly rises into something more cathartic, and it packs a whole lot of dynamic changes into its classically structured three minutes and 47 second. Check out the fucking bridge on this thing! That's how you do it!

Leyla Ebrahimi recorded "I'm Sorry Maria" with her regular collaborators Alexander 23 and Shane Pielocik, and Hannah De Vries directed the video. Check it out below.

Ebrahimi's debut EP is apparently coming soon on Deerfield/Interscope.
