United Airlines Will Now Permanently Ban People Who Don’t Use Headphones on Flights

United Airlines is taking aim at one of flying’s worst habits: playing music without headphones could get you kicked off the flight.

On February 27th, the airline updated its contract of carriage to include the new rule in the Refusal of Transport section. United now says it reserves the right to deny boarding to anyone who plays personal devices on speaker — and violators could even be permanently banned.

“We’ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content — and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers to use headphones,” said the airline in a statement. “With the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage.”

The updated document also states that any passenger who causes United Airlines “any loss, damage, or expense of any kind” may be required to reimburse the airline.

If you forget your headphones at home, fret not: United says you can request a free pair to use during the flight. They won’t have noise-canceling or any of the features you know and love, but hey, it’s better than not being able to fly.

Just so you know, playing audio out loud isn’t the only way to get the boot: offensive clothing, using cell service mid-flight, and breaking the no-smoking rule can also get you removed.
