After releasing their debut album Blood Ties earlier this year, lilo - the musical project of childhood friends Christie Gardner and Helen Dixon - have returned with their new single "Simply Put", ahead of their second run of tour dates following their debut.
“'Simply Put' is a song about ageing that has been ageing with us. I first wrote it in the transitional period of moving to university, and finding that when you’re seen as an ‘adult woman’, people start listening to you less than they did when I was a child. That excitement that people feel at an outspoken child disappeared when I became an annoying woman. The song was also partially inspired by articles I was reading by older women about drifting into invisibility in public spaces, and a conversation Helen had with her mum in which she expressed the same thing," Gardner says of the new track.
“We’ve returned to the song again and again over the years, and have found that it has only become more relevant with time. It has been such a lovely thing to return to this song as different people and see it in a more mature light that we feel is really reflected in this arrangement. It’s funny to think people listen to women less and less as they get older because I really think I’m starting to get good.”
