Logan Paul has auctioned off a rare Pikachu Pokémon card for a record-breaking $16.492million.

The Pikachu Illustrator card was given away in 1998 to winners of the CoroCoro Comic illustration competition, with just 41 made. Logan Paul bought a mint copy of the card in 2021 for $5.28million, making it the most-expensive Pokémon card in history. He went on to wear it around his neck using a diamond chain at 2022’s WrestleMania 38.

Over the weekend, Paul’s Pikachu Illustrator card sold for $16.492million at auction. The winning bidder, venture capitalist AJ Scaramucci, claimed the Pokémon card was the first step in a planned “planetary treasure hunt”, with the US Declaration Of Independence and a T-Rex skeleton next on his shopping list (via the BBC).

“What an epic night. I’m truly grateful for the Pokémon community, Ken Goldin, and my team for making last night a historic moment for the hobby. Congrats to the buyer for an iconic purchase the entire world will remember. Although bittersweet, I was proud to be a steward of the greatest collectible in the world for the last 5 years,” Paul wrote on X before denying that he had previously used the card to scam people via a NFT grift.

A Guinness World Record official said the sale had broken the record for “not only for the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold at auction, but also for the overall most expensive trading card ever sold at auction.”

During the live-streamed auction, Paul also opened up more than $1.5million worth of sealed Pokémon cards including a 1st Edition Base Set box.

Earlier this year, Logan Paul was mocked for pitching The Pokémon Company a new game, Pokémon Pink, which was basically a remake of the original Red & Blue games. Last week, it was reported that Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, the 2002 remakes of the original games, would be coming to the Nintendo Switch as part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

In other news, Call Of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be taken offline in April after it failed to meet the “expectations” of mobile gamers.
