Looking Behind the Mask of Bass Powerhouse Phrva

Hypnotizing bass artist Phrva shares insight into his unique sound, musical inspirations, and what he hopes to achieve with his project.

Emerging from the shadows, the musical prowess of bass DJ and producer Phrva is catching on like wildfire. Taking inspiration from the word “fervor,” the mysterious masked artist entrances listeners with his dark, fiery bass productions. Since launching his project in 2023, Phrva has found his stride within bass music, experimenting with his own flavor of brooding dubstep.

When asked how to sum up his sound, the talent stated, “The ideal Phrva song is a combination of both old and new styles of bass music. It’s moody and dark, but fun and energetic.”

Seeking to enliven the dancefloor, Phrva has incorporated pop hits into his sets through a series of viral flips, including “Headlock” by Imogen Heap. He infuses them with ominous soundscapes, leaving his distinct mark. It’s obvious when a track is his without even hearing his tagline.

Admitting much of his catalog is meant for boisterous parties, Phrva understands the importance of range within an artist’s releases. “I think a lot about how songs will fit into a live environment when I’m writing — whether it be that the song is for a moment to pause and cry in the club a little, or a moment to lose your shit,” he said.

His sonic range is on full display in the Genesis EP, released on Deadbeats. The titular track is a high-energy party starter, whereas “Reach Me” beckons with its enticing vocals and warbling bass. A jack of all trades, Phrva is a master at crafting standout productions destined for the stage.

Some of my favorite moments at a concert have been when I’ve heard something completely unexpected that captivated me emotionally, and I hope I can do that for others as well.

While the producer finds inspiration in pop’s biggest tunes, he also looks toward works from peers within the bass community. “I’ve found myself really inspired by people like Casey Club, Flava D, LYNY, and Taiki Nulight,” he said. “I think they’re all great examples of artists who understand songwriting perfectly and know how to make their ideas straight to the point while still being interesting.”

Riddim has also been a driver for Phrva’s creativity. He credits artists such as roi*, Modal Nodes, OSSIX, and SIZERS for serving up inventive soundscapes that push boundaries.

I find bass music to be a very flexible genre. There’s a lot you can express while still staying within the genre conventions, and I really enjoy exploring that.

As Phrva continues to flourish within bass music, he finds himself poised for a career-defining year. He’s booked for Beyond Wonderland SoCal, Forbidden Kingdom, Lightning in a Bottle, Apocalypse Zombie Land, and Big Dub, meaning this festival season is shaping up to be a busy one for the rising talent. Additionally, Phrva will join Jkyl & Hyde, Mersiv, and Peekaboo as support on select dates.

As for the future of his project, Phrva remarks, “All I can hope is that my music contributes to keeping things fun while still maintaining a degree of taste.” And ahead of the release of his new single “I Need The,” Phrva stopped by to drop off a monstrous new mix for the Bass Fidelity series.

The mix today is a blend of much of the music I’ve been working on for the past few months, with a couple of released ones in there as well. I hope it shows where my music is going and the vibe you can expect when you come to see a Phrva show.
