The ‘Brutal’ singer closed the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night (June 29), playing a setlist of her biggest hits and bringing out Robert Smith, whom she called “a personal hero of mine” and “probably the greatest songwriter to come out of England”.
Now, Partridge – Enola Holmes star and Rodrigo’s boyfriend – has weighed in on her performance, and shared some behind-the-scenes photos of the musician preparing for the career-defining set.
“I hope you caught Olivia’s show last night,” he wrote on Instagram on Monday night (June 30) “A truly special performance on such a huge scale,” he continued. “She worked her ass off for it and couldn’t be more deserving of all her success and for the great crowd that was watching. What a moment #glastonberry.”
In the comments, Rodrigo replied, “glastonBERRY ilysm”. She’s referring to a moment during her set where, before playing her track ‘So American’, she joked about the way she says the word “Glastonbury”, adopting the American pronunciation.
“I was falling in love with this boy from London, and as we were getting to know each other, we discovered all of these cross-cultural differences,” she said. “He would make fun of me for pronouncing things very American, like, ‘I’m headlining Glaston-berry!’”
NME gave Rodrigo’s headline performance four stars, in a review that read: “For the few naysayers doubting whether or not the 22-year-old was ready to take on the coveted Pyramid slot as the last headliner before a fallow year, this one that will stand the test of time and leave us impatient for the Glasto magic to return.”
Ahead of her Glasto slot, Rodrigo surprised fans at her BST Hyde Park headline gig by bringing out Ed Sheeran to perform ‘The A Team’, and covered Fontaines D.C.‘s ‘I Love You’ at a show in Dublin.
