Maynard James Keenan Goes Shopping at Amoeba Records, Buys Devo, Joni Mitchell, Minor Threat Albums

Maynard James Keenan is the latest musician to participate in Amoeba Records’ “What’s in My Bag?” video series, in which an artist visits the store and picks out albums to buy.

In the video, the Tool / Puscifer / A Perfect Circle singer is first seen walking around the famed Los Angeles record shop and filling up a tote bag with vinyl. He then discusses each item, beginning with jazz act the Ahmad Jamal Trio’s 1970 album The Awakening.

“This guy started playing piano at the age of 3,” said Keenan of Ahmad Jamal. “This is such a complicated, amazing musician. This is the only guy that Miles Davis said, ‘That guy can play!'”

Keenan’s purchases ranged from a Joni Mitchell live album to Minor Threat’s self-titled LP to N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton.

As someone born in Akron, Ohio, Keenan also gave some hometown hero props to Devo and The Pretenders (lead singer Chrissie Hynde is from Akron).

Other albums Keenan placed in his bag include releases by Swans, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, and X. He also picked up V is Versatile from his own band Puscifer, giving credit to bandmate Mat Mitchell for being the creative force behind the live-performance release.

Finally, Keenan purchased one non-music item, a Pee-Wee Herman coffee mug.
