Mike D is gearing up to release his debut solo album, Thank You, later this summer. Over the weekend, the Beastie Boys member made his first televised appearance in support of the project, stopping by Later… with Jools Holland to perform “Switch Up” and “What We Got.” Watch the replays below.
The 60-year-old rapper was accompanied by his sons, Skyler and Davis, and other members of the 5D band, all clad in matching red sweatsuits. Performing over instrumentals mixing hip-hop, funk, and psych-rock elements, the lithe musician seemed to have a firm command of the new material.
This wasn’t unexpected, though, as Mike D and his backing band have recently been performing Beastie Boys songs and new music during a series of intimate shows scattered across California and New York City.
Besides a handful of European shows scheduled for the remainder of the month — including an appearance at Beyond the Streets in Paris — Mike will play San Francisco’s Portola Music Festival in late September.
