Morrissey has announced his new album, Make-Up Is a Lie. Out February 27th, the LP marks his return to Sire/Warner Records after three decades. As a preview, he’s released the title track, which you can stream below.
Produced by previous collaborator Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), Make-Up Is a Lie was recorded at Studio La Fabrique in the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence region of Southern France. A press release describes the record as an exploration of “poetic and provocative lyrics” and “evocatively unpredictable instrumentation,” with a title meant to be “an explicit call for unvarnished truth and expression.”
The project arrives after Morrissey claimed his shelved album, Bonfire of Teenagers, was intentionally sabotaged by Capitol Records. In 2024, he said “nobody” will release his music due to the war on “free speech” in England.
“Make-Up Is a Lie” was co-written with Morrissey’s keyboardist Camila Grey, centering on a woman who haunts The Smiths co-founder from the afterlife. “10 years passed in boredom,” he sings. “I made my way to Paris/ To stand before her gravestone/ I read the words in granite.”
This weekend, Morrissey is scheduled to kick off a series of US tour dates (get tickets here) that were postponed last year. The brief run will be followed by a show in the Dominican Republic and a string of concerts in Europe/UK.
Time will tell how many of those dates Morrissey will actually complete. According to publicly available data, he has played about 70% of his scheduled concerts over the last decade-plus.
Morrissey’s most recent album, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, was released in 2020.
