Last Friday (19 December), Morrissey reportedly signed to Sire Records, as indicated by posts of the Sire logo on his official Instagram page and website.
This comes after a long period (we're talking over a decade) of instability with record labels for the former Smiths vocalist. His deal with Capitol Music/Harvest Records ended less than a month after the release of his 10th studio album, World Peace Is None Of Your Business, in 2014. When he eventually signed to BMG Records a few years later, he was dropped in 2020, blaming the label's "new plans for diversity". He managed to release three albums under BMG: Low in High School, California Sun, and I Am Not a Dog on a Chain.
In 2021, Morrissey had a brief redemption arc with Capitol when he signed a new deal for his album Bonfire of Teenagers. The album was set for release in February 2023, but the relationship between Morrissey and Capitol dissolved once again, as he shared that he'd "voluntarily withdrawn from any association with Capitol Records."
Bonfire of Teenagers was set to be "the best album of my life", according to Morrissey, with a stacked list of features from Iggy Pop, members from Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Miley Cyrus (who later asked to be removed from the song they worked on together). The label retained the rights to the album until 2024, when Morrissey announced that he'd bought back the rights for both World Peace Is None Of Your Business and Bonfire of Teenagers.
While fans assumed that signing to Sire Records might point to Bonfire of Teenagers finally being unearthed, Morrissey has been sitting on a second body of work: You're Right, It's Time.
In an interview with Polish magazine Teraz Rock, Morrissey shared that the album was due to be released back in September, stating, "The second album will be released first. It's called You're Right, It's Time. Everyone who's heard it thinks it is Morrissey's best album yet."
Although the September release window has been missed, the tracklist suggests that a new Morrissey album might just see the light of day. See the full list of songs below:
