Algorithm wil be Imbruglia's first full-length release since her 2021 album Firebird, and sees her entering a new musical chapter, with "Upside Down" being the first preview.
Speaking about the new song, Imbruglia explains: “The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it. In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support. So that’s where the song was born from, that fight to maintain a semblance of what some might consider normality.”
Imbruglia co-wrote and co-produced all of the songs on the album, which is inspired by the dancefloor sound of disco, pop, and house. She invited a range of producers and songwriters to collaborate with on Algorithm, including MyRiot (London Grammar), David Sneddon (Lana Del Rey, Hurts), Fraser T Smith (Adele, Dave, Stormzy, Sam Smith), Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai (Lewis Capaldi, Declan J Donovan), Tobie Tripp (George Ezra), Mark Crew (Bastille, James Arthur) and Dan Priddy (Rag'n'Bone Man, Bastille).
Discussing the process behind the album, Imbruglia says: “On this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song. I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.
"This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record. It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”
