Netflix has revealed the first trailer for The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel.

Directed by Ben Feldman, the documentary is billed as an in-depth look at Chili Peppers‘ “gritty formative years” and the “singular vision of original guitarist Hillel Slovak.” Through interviews with band members Flea and Anthony Kiedis, along with others close to Slovak, it explores the group’s early days in the LA music scene and the “deep bond of their childhood friendship.”

Despite the participation of Flea and Kiedis, however, Chili Peppers recently distanced themselves from the project, saying “We had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary.”

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel will receive its worldwide premiere at SXSW on March 13th before arriving on Netflix on March 20th.

Hillel joined Red Hot Chili Peppers shortly after their formation in 1983, and appeared on their first three albums before dying of a drug overdose in 1988 at the age of 26.
