Wherever he goes, the wind follows. And the wind… is blowing on Prime Video. Spider-Noir, the pulpy detective reimagining of Spider-Man starring Nicolas Cage, has received its first teaser trailer, which you can watch below.
Premiering on Prime Video on May 27th, the Spider-Noir series sort of kind of spins off Cage’s voice role as Spider-Man Noir in the animated Spider-Verse film franchise. However, he’s not playing the same grizzled Peter Parker here; instead, his character is Ben Reilly, who has retired his crimefighting identity of The Spider and is working as a down-on-his-luck private investigator when the show picks up.
The Reilly character, as comic fans know, is a clone of Parker introduced in the ’70s who eventually took on the costumed name Scarlet Spider. Noting that the Parker identity was too “boyish” to play in Spider-Noir, co-showrunner Oren Uziel and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller told Esquire the switch to Reilly will be explained, but they “have to be coy about the reasons, because you’ll find out.”
Spider-Noir will find Cage’s Reilly digging out The Spider digs as a gangland boss named Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson) is targeted for assassination. An arsonist who torched Silvermane’s mansion turns out to be a super-powered man who can create fire from his hands. Reilly’s investigation puts him in the path of hired heavyweight Flint Marko (Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston), and sees him teaming up with dogged, optimistic journalist Robbie Robinson (New Girl and Fargo’s Lamorne Morris) and his loyal secretary Janet (Karen Rodriguez of The Hunting Wives).
(Nerdy note: Flint Marko is the real name of Spidey villain Sandman, though another character called Michael “Man Mountain” Marko was originally associated with Silvermane in the books.)
Rounding out the cast is Sinners breakout Li Jun Li as the femme fatale Cat Hardy, a chanteuse who is somehow responsible for getting Reilly caught in the web of underground conspiracy. The character’s name is a clear play on the classic Spider-Man anti-heroine Felicia “Black Cat” Hardy.
Prime Video will offer Spider-Noir in both pulpy color and black and white, with Esquire having an in-depth breakdown of how the crew achieved the disparate looks in a single shot. You can see the difference in the photos included in the gallery below, and sign up for a 30-day free trial of Prime Video to catch Spider-Noir.
Meanwhile, the “true” Marvel Spider-Man will return on July 31st in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, Jacob Batalon, Tramell Tillman, and Marvin Jones III.
