The Queens-based musician Nick Hakim has a warm, personal sound that doesn't fit neatly into any genre categories. He's a soul singer, more or less, but there's a psychedelic, lo-fi indie rock sensibility to his music. Hakim is also a prolific collaborator. Since the release of 2022's Cometa, his last solo album, Hakim has contributed heavily to records from peers like Adrianne Lenker, Miley Cyrus, Beth Orton, and Show Me The Body, among tons of others. He produced one of the best tracks on the new Wiki album, which comes out Friday. Now, Hakim is ready to come back with a new LP of his own.
Last month, Nick Hakim shared two lovely new solo tracks, "Real Here Now" and "Water." Both appear on I Can See, the new album that Hakin will release this summer. Hakim worked on the songs over the past five years, and he went through the end of a long-term relationship during that time. Eventually, Hakim turned his bedroom demos into full recordings, working with producer Andrew Sarlo, his fellow Big Thief/Dijon collaborator, at Texas' Sonic Ranch and at a bunch of New York studios. Heba Kandry, who's worked on past records from legends like Björk and Ryuichi Sakamoto, mixed the LP.
Today, Hakim shares the album-opening title track from I Can See. It's a lush, expansive indie-soul lament that unfolds over nearly six minutes, and it's extremely pretty. Along with the song, Hakim has announced an international tour that'll kick off in his Washington, DC hometown in September. Below, check out "I Can See," the new LP's tracklist, and Hakim's tour dates.
