Nicki Minaj Goes Viral for Past Comments Admitting She Came to US Illegally

Some Nicki Minaj fans are breaking up with their favorite artist, and like any breakup, this parasocial relationship can be mourned through old messages. Were there signs? Was she always like this? As Minaj continues to cozy up to Donald Trump, Minaj’s comments about coming to the US “as an illegal immigrant” are going viral.

“I came to this country as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old,” she wrote in a 2018 Facebook post during the immigration crackdowns of the first Trump administration. Next to images of a juvenile detention center, she continued, “I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5. This is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now?”

Despite her resources, Minaj has found it difficult to officially transition from taxpayer to legal citizen in the United States. In a 2024 TikTok live (and via TMZ), she confirmed that she wasn’t yet a citizen. “I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I’ve been in the States for many years. You would think that with the millions of dollars that I’ve paid in taxes to this country that I would have been given an honorary citizenship many, many, many thousands of years ago.”

But in December, Minaj appeared at Erika Kirk’s Turning Point USA Conference, a conservative action group founded by Charlie Kirk. There she expressed frustration with Governor Gavin Newsom and explained her embrace of the conservative movement. And on January 18th the rapper dropped an American flag emoji to support a Congressional initiative called the SAVE Act, which is meant to stop “illegal aliens” from “voting and engaging in our democracy.” Hey, weren’t we just talking about someone who came to the US illegally? Pretty cool how other people support your right to engage in our democracy, wouldn’t you say, Nicki?

In recent months, Minaj has also beefed with Cardi B and threatened to quit music because of JAY-Z.
