‘No Other Choice’ hits back at Oscars snub with viral billboard

The studio behind Park Chan-wook’s comedy thriller No Other Choice have reacted to the film’s Oscar snub with a tongue-in-cheek billboard advertisement.

The South Korean film, about a man who goes to extreme measures to eliminate competition for a job he wants, was one of the surprise omissions from the Oscar nominations announcement, missing out on the Best International Feature Film category. The distributor, Neon, put up a billboard in Los Angeles on Tuesday (February 10) to express their disappointment.

The advertisement featured the film’s title, with the words “For Your Consideration” above it – a phrase used to ask awards voters to keep the film in mind. However, an image of
Lee Byung-hun throwing a potted plant, a key scene in the film, obscures the “For”, making it appear to say “F Your Consideration”. The point is underlined by a line at the top of the billboard which says “A Snub Above The Rest”.

The billboard was shared by Neon on social media with the caption “Rise above.”

No Other Choice wasn’t the only film to be surprisingly left out of the Oscar nominations. Wicked: For Good, the blockbuster musical sequel, missed out on all categories after receiving 10 nominations last year for the first movie.

Fans expressed their frustration at the omission online, with one pointing out that stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo opened the ceremony with a medley last year, writing: “So the Oscars use Ariana Grande for clout and attention last year to get their highest ratings of the decade just to pay her dust I’m so sick”.

Elsewhere, social media reacted with shock at Paul Mescal not receiving a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Hamnet, despite co-star Jessie Buckley receiving a Best Actress nod. The Irish actor did receive BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for his performance as William Shakespeare in the drama.
