The massive new charity compilation HELP(2) is out today, and it features Olivia Rodrigo’s cover of The Magnetic Fields’ “The Book of Love.”
Rooted in a warm, finger-picked acoustic guitar, Rodrigo’s rendition of “The Book of Love” is faithful and stirring. It gains more courage as it goes along, Rodrigo’s voice filling the room with reverb and strings rising in intensity. As the closer of the compilation album, it’s almost like a lullaby, capping off an album’s worth of meditations on war and its wreckage with a note of peace and tenderness.
Rodrigo’s cover of “The Book of Love” is her first new song in nearly two years; she’s rumored to be working on a follow up 2023’s GUTS this year. As for the newly-released HELP(2), the charity album — which benefits the humanitarian organization War Child UK — features contributions from Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Fontaines D.C., Pulp, Damon Albarn, Foals, Cameron Winter, Wet Leg, and many more.
